THEN THERE WAS THE TIME MY CONSTRAINTS GAVE ME FREEDOM…
I’ve had an Asana account since I started Speak Up Stories. How much I have used it prior to 2023 is laughable.
The reason why I didn’t use it is also laughable.
I didn’t like Asana because I didn’t like the idea that I would be able to track when I missed a deadline. I am old school meaning that I went to school when technology was old. Red = bad. Red due dates = you didn’t get it done.
I didn’t like that. I liked being flexible and fluid and not tracking my progress in my projects worked for me.
Well, at least that’s the lie I told myself.
Yes, it worked – I got all the work done. But I also let a lot fall through the cracks and created even more stress for myself when I would get lost as to what I was supposed to be doing.
This summer, I knew I would be in a rough spot if I did not keep myself organized and clear. So I re-committed to Asana.
I still hate it.
But…it keeps my discipline greater than my motivation. For example, I am writing to you at the end of the work day at the end of a LONG day. Furthermore, my Arizona Diamondbacks are playing in the playoffs. I don’t want to be writing this. But I also know that if I don’t write it now, I will certainly be passing the buck to another day, that will just add to the stress of my day.
Isn’t it funny? The more we constrain ourselves and limit ourselves, the more we thrive? The more we keep to our discipline and not buy into the often times nonsense reasons as to why we don’t want to do something, the more we get done.
Look, discipline doesn’t feel good in the moment. But having tackled that task, built the skill, and overcome the resistance (term used in reference from another great book The War Of Art) THAT does feel good.
You know what else feels good?
Taking another step to the big goals you have.
So i will cross this off my Asana checklist (I hope there is a cool animation with this one), with gladness in my heart, not gratitude that I finally got it done.
I will know that, even if I didn’t feel like it, I did have the capacity for it.
And next time I question my capacity, I’ll remember that I can, and will do it.

THE KEY TO MOTIVATION IS SOMETHING WE ALL RESIST
Motivation, while uplifting in the moment, is fleeting and does not sustain the discipline required for long-term success, a point underscored by emphasizing that true commitment—far less glamorous and often challenging—is the real driver behind achieving goals.
