WE MUST LEARN TO LIVE TOGETHER AS BROTHERS OR PERISH TOGETHER AS FOOLS.
SPEAKING WITH CIVILITY IS PATRIOTIC.
🇺🇸 HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY 🇺🇸
Independence Day is a special holiday for me. It’s a great time to think about speaking kindly and respectfully.
I love this country and am proud to be its citizen.
But sometimes, saying this makes me stop and think.
It’s odd, isn’t it? Being proud of our country can sometimes bring worry about what others will say. I think about the negative comments and articles that show the U.S.’s faults.
To anyone who might disagree, I want to say I get it.
Our country isn’t perfect and can always get better.
We have problems, and how we talk about them often worsens things. This is why speaking with civility is so important.
Note: This week, we’re talking about being polite and respectful, not politics.
Remember, being civil in our talks is important. “Debate should be lively but always respectful,” according to Robert’s Rules of Order. This rule is key to speaking with civility.
When we communicate, being civil is essential for good conversations and solving problems. Civility leads to trust and respect, helping us work together to find solutions.
Often, debates turn into personal attacks. Our leaders should be ethical, but we shouldn’t ignore good ideas just because of someone’s past. This is another reason why civility matters.
🇺🇸 As we celebrate our nation, let’s aim to talk about our country’s issues with more civility. Being professional and respectful can inspire our leaders too.
🎤 MIC CHECK: HOW TO SPEAK WITH CIVILITY
Here are some essential tips on how to speak with civility:
📊 First, Trust Over Facts. Surprisingly, just facts won’t always convince people. Trust is what really sways them. If people don’t trust where the information comes from, they might not believe it, even if it’s true. Building trust is a big part of speaking with civility.
Key takeaway: To really persuade, focus on building trust.
🤫 Next, Feeling Heard Is Key. Think about what Forest Gump said: “That’s all I have to say about that.” This means people need to feel heard before they’ll listen. To speak with civility, start by listening. Try to understand others before you share your thoughts.
Key Takeaway: First listen, then understand, and finally speak.
✅ Lastly, Embrace Complex Solutions. Often, there’s no simple fix to a tough problem. We like easy solutions, but real problems usually need more than that. Sticking to just one idea can limit your thinking. Speaking with civility means being open to different solutions.
Key Takeaway: Open your mind to various ideas to solve problems better.
Keep speaking up your story,

THEN THERE WAS THE TIME SOMEONE WALKED OUT OF MY SPEECH WHEN I MENTIONED I AM AN IMMIGRANT…
I bring that up early in my speeches, and it is the line that makes me the most nervous. The moment I see people scowl at me and leave the room, I want to justify, to explain, to reason, to speak, to persuade, but I know I can’t. Click on the button to read more.
