Then There Was The Time A Bumper Sticker Changed My View Of Empathy…

EMPATHY AND SELF-DISCOVERY ARE FOUND WHERE YOU LEAST EXPECT THEM.

I thought I knew all about empathy – how to practice it, how to teach it, how to inspire it! But, a good leader finds ways to refine their thinking, even in unexpected places.

Recently, I visited Loyal Sons Barbershop, a place known for not only great haircuts but also for its joyous atmosphere. The shop is adorned with amusing bumper stickers and fridge magnets.

While I was getting my haircut, one particular sticker grabbed my attention. I can’t recall its advertisement, but its message was memorable:

“Don’t criticize what you don’t understand.”

Consequently, this statement made me think deeply. Imagine if we refrained from criticizing things beyond our understanding. Furthermore, it prompted me to consider what I genuinely know. There are various areas where I possess skill and knowledge. Interestingly, when I listed these areas, I noticed an omission:

Myself.

Now, I understand myself better than ever before (I believe). However, there were years when I didn’t. Focusing on others’ needs, especially as an Enneagram 2, I neglected self-care. This oversight left little room for self-understanding.

Nevertheless, through an ongoing journey of self-discovery, I’ve learned to cultivate and share empathy. This process has significantly improved my relationships, communication abilities, coaching, and much more.

That bumper sticker imparted two essential lessons:

1. Continuously strive to understand myself. This is crucial for maintaining a balanced life.

2. Now, before I judge, I take a moment to consider my understanding of the person or situation.

This reflective pause has been instrumental in helping me avoid hasty conclusions and in developing empathy for others. Remarkably, I can extend this empathy because I first nurtured it within myself.

I hope this message reaches you in good spirits. Always remember to offer yourself kindness, forgiveness, and empathy. Our flaws and errors don’t define us or those around us.

DON’T CRITISIZE WHAT YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND…

That’s quite the statement, isn’t it? What if we took that philosophy everywhere we went? What if, instead of casting immediate judgment on someone or something we see (and, believe me – there is a LOT to cast judgment on!), we pause and consider whether or not we fully understand the person’s intention, thoughts,, and yes, maybe even pain?
