CELEBRATING CULTURES CREATES CONNECTIONS AND CONVERSATIONS

Try saying that five times fast.

This week, I’m am celebrating Latin Heritage Month. Born in Mexico, and being an immigrant to this country, this is an important time for me to reflect on my upbringing and to pass down traditions and celebrations to my family.

But there’s more…

HERE’S WHY IT MATTERS:

Mark Twain said it best: “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”

I get to share in my celebration of Latin Heritage by sharing my stories. And I listen when other stories of other cultures are being told. The more we can see anything in our reality from someone else’s perspective, the more we can grow.

🎤 MIC CHECK: CELEBRATING LATIN HERITAGE MONTH

This week’s Mic Check is more like three aspects of Latin culture that I love to share with others:

There are three key differences between arrogance and confidence.

CELEBRATION: DĂŤA DE LOS MUERTOS

Popularized by movies like The Book of Life and Coco, this celebration honors those who have come before us. We are who we are today because of the choices of our ancestors. Some of those choices we can be grateful for, others we can learn from. Either way, we can honor these people and we can pass along the important life lessons they brought us.

BOOK: EFRÉN DIVIDED

If you want an experience of what it is like to be part of an immigrant family, read EfrĂ©n Divided by Ernesto Cisneros. It is honest, it is heartfelt, it is brave, and it paints such a perfect picture of the struggles and triumphs of a Hispanic immigrant’s experience.

FOOD TO FOLLOW: CHEF MARIA MAZON

My family and I are obsessed with Top Chef. So a few seasons ago, I was surprised when one of the contestant introduce herself as being from Tucson, Arizona, which is where I first arrived to the United States and spent most of my formative years. Follow her on Instagram for a TOP expereince. If that’s not enough, and you are looking for actual food, I highly encourage you to visit Tucson, Arizona.

Why?

Well, as they say, a picture is worth a 100 words:…

By the way, yes I can confirm this is true.

Keep speaking up your story,

A SPEAKER’S INTEGRITY AS THE FOUNDATION FOR CONFIDENCE

Speakers must care about their off-stage presence as much as their on-stage performance. In this video, I address three key elements of a speaker’s off-stage presence. Click on the button below to learn more!

THEN THERE WAS THE TIME I FAKED IT TO BECOME IT…

Then there was the time I faked it until I made it…I mean, BECAME it. Confidence was not about trying to be someone I was not, although it felt like that most days. Confidence was about accepting myself for who I was.  Click on the button below to learn more!
